What is the Sunshine Vicram series about?
Sun Vicram ran away from Del Sol, New Mexico years ago. Now she has been elected sheriff and has to go back. The problem is that someone in her hometown has been trying to kill her, and she has no idea who or why. Darynda Jones writes comedy-mystery with a particular flair: the humor is fast, the banter is sharp, and the situations have a delightful tendency to spiral. Del Sol is a small town with peculiar traditions — including a community-wide habit of meddling in Sun’s personal life — and the cast of locals who populate it are the kind of characters readers tend to fall in love with. The mystery plots are solid, but the series runs on personality.
Sun herself is one of the genuinely great comic heroines of recent cosy crime. She is smart, self-deprecating, and surrounded by chaos she mostly did not invite. Her daughter, Auri, is a force of nature in her own right, and the mother-daughter dynamic gives the series an emotional grounding that pure comedy-mysteries often lack. Del Sol also has a wonderfully absurd local mythology — a town so strange that its residents barely blink at the inexplicable. Jones uses that texture to make the comedy feel organic rather than forced, rooted in a place with its own peculiar rules.
Should I read the Sunshine Vicram series in order?
Yes. The overarching mystery of who keeps trying to kill Sun, and why she really came back to Del Sol, threads through all three books and resolves in the final entry. The romantic storylines also develop in sequence. At only three books, the series is short enough that starting at the beginning is the obvious and easy choice. A Bad Day for Sunshine sets up everything efficiently, and the payoff in the third book only works if you have invested in the earlier setup.
The completeness is itself a selling point. Jones knew what story she was telling and told it — no stretched-out mid-series filler, no unresolved threads left dangling for a fourth book that never arrives.
Who will enjoy the Sunshine Vicram series?
Readers who want their cosy mysteries genuinely funny — not just gently amusing, but laugh-out-loud witty. Fans of Richard Osman’s Thursday Murder Club who want something with more romantic tension, or fans of Amish Candy Shop Mystery who want a bigger comedic swing, will find Sunshine Vicram hits a different but satisfying note. This is cosy crime with a lot of energy and zero pretension.
Jones’s fans from her Charley Davidson paranormal series will recognize the voice immediately, though Sunshine Vicram is more grounded. Readers who think cosy crime is too slow or too gentle will find this series has real teeth under the comedy — the stakes are genuine and the emotional moments land.
What makes the Sunshine Vicram series worth reading?
Jones has a gift for voice. Sun’s narration is a sustained pleasure — dry, self-aware, and perpetually surprised by how difficult her life has become. The series is complete at three books, which means you can read the whole thing in a weekend and get a proper ending. That’s rarer than it should be.
The real achievement is sustaining the comedy without sacrificing the mystery. Many humorous crime series let the jokes overwhelm the plot, or let the plot overwhelm the jokes. Jones keeps both elements properly balanced throughout all three books — which is considerably harder than it looks.
