Booktown Mystery
By Lorna Barrett · 19 books · 2008–present
The Booktown Mystery series by Lorna Barrett is one of the most enduring cosy mystery series in print. Set in Stoneham, New Hampshire — a fictional village where every business is themed around books — it follows Tricia Miles, owner of Haven’t Got a Clue, a vintage mystery bookshop. Tricia has a talent for finding bodies, a reluctant partnership with the local police, and an irrepressible sister named Angelica who provides much of the series’ comic relief.
What makes Stoneham special is its premise: an entire town reinvented around books and bookselling. The concept is inspired by real-life book towns such as Hay-on-Wye in Wales, and Barrett builds it out with evident pleasure. Rare-book dealers, children’s bookshops, cookbook stores, and travel-writing specialists all share the same main street, creating a setting that feels both whimsical and lived-in. Each shop has an owner with a distinct personality and a backstory that gradually fills in across the series. This is one of the more generous casts in cosy fiction — Stoneham’s residents are not furniture.
Tricia herself is worth spending time with. She is competent, self-reliant, and slightly more world-weary than the average cosy protagonist — she has a failed marriage behind her and has learned to trust her own judgment more than other people’s assurances. Her relationship with her sister Angelica is the emotional engine of the series. Angelica is louder, more impulsive, and better at charming people, and the push-pull between them — competitive, loving, occasionally infuriating — is rendered with real affection over nineteen books.
The mysteries themselves are reliably plotted, with Barrett finding fresh angles on the bookshop-murder premise across a run that most series could not sustain beyond five or six instalments. The fact that Stoneham continues to feel alive after nearly two decades of publishing is a genuine achievement.
Reading Order
Read in publication order. The mysteries are self-contained, but Tricia’s personal life — her romances, her evolving relationship with Angelica, and her growing influence in Stoneham — builds steadily across the series. Starting at book one gives you the full arc, and the first book, Murder is Binding, sets up the Stoneham world efficiently without overloading you with characters. Barrett trusts you to keep up.
Who Will Enjoy This Series
If you love bookshop settings and a sleuth who lets curiosity overrule caution, this series is for you. Fans of Ellery Adams will feel at home here — both authors create mysteries steeped in books and community, with warmth at the centre of every story. The tone is light but the plots are well-crafted, and Barrett keeps the formula fresh across nearly two decades of publishing.
Readers who enjoy a strong sense of place, a large recurring cast, and a protagonist who grows across a long series will find a lot to love in Stoneham. Nineteen books is a serious commitment, but this is exactly the kind of series that rewards it — each book deepens the world rather than simply repeating it.
