Books by the Bay Mystery
By Ellery Adams · 8 books · 2010–present
The Books by the Bay Mystery series by Ellery Adams is set in Oyster Bay, a charming fictional town on the coast of North Carolina. The series follows Olivia Limoges, a wealthy and somewhat guarded restaurant owner who finds community — and trouble — through the Bayside Book Writers, a local writing group whose members have a talent for stumbling into real-life mysteries.
Olivia is a richly drawn protagonist: self-possessed and sharp, with a complicated past she guards carefully and a standard poodle named Captain Haviland who accompanies her everywhere. She is not the warm, instantly likeable amateur sleuth that populates so many cosy mysteries — she is prickly, private, and occasionally ruthless in protecting what she loves. That edge makes her far more interesting to spend eight books with. Her slow-burn relationship with Police Chief Rawlings gives the series romantic warmth without ever overwhelming the plots, and Adams has the good sense to let that relationship develop at its own pace rather than resolving it too early.
The Bayside Book Writers group is the series’ secret weapon. Each member — the young waitress, the shy librarian, the pompous retired professor — brings a different perspective to the mysteries, and they function as a kind of collective conscience for Oyster Bay. Their critique sessions, which open or close each book, are a clever device: the group comments on craft and story in ways that mirror what a reader might think about the mystery itself.
The coastal setting is beautifully realised across eight books, with the rhythms of small-town seaside life — fishing boats, seafood restaurants, tourist season, the particular quality of light on open water — woven naturally into each story rather than serving as mere backdrop. Adams is particularly good at making Oyster Bay feel like a community with a history, full of long-running grievances and loyalties that predate Olivia’s arrival. The mysteries dig into that history: family secrets, buried scandals, and the things small towns prefer not to remember. The series ran from 2010 to 2017 and is now complete at eight books.
Reading Order
Read in publication order. Olivia’s backstory and her relationship with Rawlings develop meaningfully across the series, and the Bayside Book Writers group evolves in ways that are best appreciated from the start. The first book, A Killer Plot, does solid work establishing both the setting and the ensemble cast without feeling like a slow warm-up. You can be confident the series hits its stride early.
Who Will Enjoy This Series
Readers who love atmospheric settings and a strong, independent female protagonist will find much to enjoy here. If you have already worked through Lorna Barrett’s Booktown Mystery or the Secret, Book and Scone Society series, Books by the Bay makes an excellent companion read. The coastal atmosphere distinguishes it from Adams’s other work, giving it a distinctive flavour among her bookish mysteries. Those who tend to find cosy protagonists too sunny and accommodating may be pleasantly surprised by Olivia — she is the rare cosy sleuth who feels like she could handle herself in something darker. That quality gives the series a slightly harder edge than the setting might suggest.
