Who is Alexander McCall Smith?

He was born in Bulawayo, Southern Rhodesia, in 1948, and grew up in the country that is now Zimbabwe. He studied law, eventually becoming a professor of medical law at the University of Edinburgh, where he spent decades building a distinguished academic career. The legal work was serious. The fiction he wrote in his spare time was something else entirely.

His first book for children appeared in 1980. For years he wrote steadily alongside his academic duties, publishing broadly but without the kind of attention that changes a career. Then, in 1998, he published The No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency. It had been turned down by a number of publishers. When it finally appeared, it sold modestly at first — and then, a few years later, it became one of the most beloved series in modern fiction, translated into more than forty languages and read by tens of millions of people worldwide.

“Botswana is a wonderful country. I think if I were to be reincarnated, I would want to come back as a Botswanan.”

Precious Ramotswe, the traditionally built proprietor of Botswana’s only ladies’ detective agency, is his most enduring creation. She solves cases by listening, by paying attention to people, by understanding the small mechanics of how communities work. McCall Smith has said she reflects values he genuinely admires: kindness, patience, a quiet moral seriousness. The books are gentle, but they are not lightweight. They say something about how to live.

He has also written the 44 Scotland Street series, set in Edinburgh, and the Isabel Dalhousie philosophical detective novels, among many other series and standalones. He is one of the most prolific literary authors alive, publishing multiple books a year across wildly different registers while maintaining a quality that his peers would struggle to match at a fraction of the pace.
